Fabio Modica was born in
Catania
in 1978. Being an apprentice to such well-established Italian painters
as Alberto Abbate and Antonio Sciacca, he was initially inspired by the
classical Renaissance, drawing occasionally on the Greek and Latin
mythology. In his early years as a painter, he chose human figures
wrapped in a Caravaggesque light as his major subject-matter and oils as
his favourite medium. He also tried his hands at several techniques,
including watercolours, acrylics and chalks.
His acquaintance with a famous expressionist Italian painter, Antonio
Santacroce, who taught him painting at the Nike Academy in
Catania, marked a radical change in his work.
Under his influence, Modica has gradually departed from the
representational style towards a semi-abstracted perspective, in which
painting about painting and a love for sheer lines and colours have
begun to struggle with his long-lasting feel for figurative art, seeking
in vain a balance.
His trip to Mexico
marked a further development in this direction, as it triggered a
variety of sketches of Mexican villagers’ everyday life which he
executed with acrylics on jute in a slightly abstracted manner.
Over time he has grown a passion for the nude art which inspired a
series of paintings where representation blends with abstraction, using
a vivid and dramatic colour palette.
His most recent pieces are close portraits shaping a particular mood or
a piece of memory. They have been accomplished using multiple layers of
acrylic paint and a combination of block-style patterns and harsh, thick
spatula strokes.
Fabio Modica is
currently teaching painting and drawing classes at the
Nike
Academy, Catania. His work has been included in many
shows and group exhibitions in his home town, in Italy and abroad.
He has recently started a fruitful collaboration with two noteworthy
Modern and Contemporary Art Galleries in London: "The Brick Lane
Gallery" in London's East End and central "Opus Gallery" in Covent
Garden. In Italy, he is currently working with Gallery "Il Borgo" in
Milan and "Spazio d’Arte l’Altrove" in Ferrara. The latter is going to
promote his work in several galleries in Milan, Siena and Bologna over
2010. In Nice, France, his works are permanently displayed at the
magnificent Villa Magdalena, alongside Salvatore Fiume’s works. He is
about to start a collaboration with Contemporary Art Gallery “Agora” in
Manhattan, NY.
